An interesting question when you think about it.

To be real nitpicky, in theory, all of our pledge initiations are "open" because pledges (PNM's) are not initiated actives, are they?

So, in reality, all of our pledge ceremonies are being performed for and before non initiated people.

I'd never thought of that.

Dude, Im part philosopher, and all I can say is like, wow, you must have ate shrooms back in the day because that makes less sense than Rudey dating JustAMom. (see how I kept that all about greek chat).

Pledges are people you will initate. The Pledge ceremonies are often times redructions and drastic simpilizations of at least a part or overall theme of the Ritual itself. That is why its important to keep pledge rituals closed to the public. Also, whatever its orgin, the Pledge Ceremony is a statement of trust between the Brothers and the Pledges to their Brotherhood, saying they will be brothers. It is the offical ritualized genisis of the foundation of trust. What is brotherhood without trust? Underwhelming organized chaos.
