What they're really closer to are dorms or mini apartments, owned by a house corporation rather than the university. (or, in some cases, by the university itself) In other words, the chapater doesn't own the house at all, but rather, leases it from the fraternity or alumni. The students don't own their rooms, they rent them. That's a business. Sorry.
I have no idea what the SDSU houses are set up like, and frankly don't care, but if you walk into any of our houses at Clarion, you are in the HOUSE. There is no dormlike "common area." It also really doesn't matter who is paying who for what - you live there, and you think of it as your college home. If your Greek house is nothing more to you than glorified student housing, sorry, that's pitiful.

And as far as I'm concerned - that doesn't matter. I think the houses at Pitt are set up like this (entryway on bottom) and there is still no way in hell I would just stroll in, any more than I would randomly go walking into apartment buildings. I have no business being there, so why WOULD I be?
