White Dresses

Just a heads-up. As a new member, you will most likely need an all-white dress and all-white shoes, as most, but not all sororities, conduct a new member ceremony with all the members wearing white. Some sororities may wear all black.

White dress or black dress, I just wanted to put this out there, as it is still summer time and you have an opportunity to get your whites now. I've seen some really cute things at all of the major department stores, and also at the GAP, Ann Taylor, etc. Ross and Marshalls, etc., are also great places to go!

There is also a store called White House/Black Market that I believe is expanding. Everything there is either white or black.

Whatever color you have to wear, get something nice so you don't hate wearing it!

I went into rush last year knowing pretty much nothing about Greek life. As it wound up, I had to have my mom overnight my white graduation dress and shoes to me at school. Although you can probably borrow a dress and shoes from one of the other girls in your chapter (I know my sisters said they had enough white dresses and shoes to start a department store ), it's nice to have your own, because you will eventually need it.

Good heads up on the dress/shoes thing. The things I could have known going into rush last year if I would have found GreekChat earlier!

I never had to wear a white or black dress for ANYTHING during my time as a collegian. Just food for thought.

We needed black...but it didn't have to be a dress...a skirt/shirt was ok

Is it just me, or are white dress shoes more uncomfortable than any other color?? I have the same shoes in black and white and I swear that the white ones are a hundred times more painful than the black ones!

Just another thought. Becareful of what style of dress you choose. Not all chapters have this rule but in my chapter all white dresses have to be tea to floor length

Great input, all. I would just advise for now to put something on hold that is modest, and doesn't show too much bust or leg.

As I said, not EVERY sorority does the all-black, or all-white, but it is required for MANY. Black is easy to find any time of the year, but after Labor Day, white will be growing scarce. So stock up and if you don't need it, you can return it later!

j. crew and banana republic both have a few different white dresses on sale right now. as i was walking through there the other day all i could think of was how perfect they'd be for when i needed them at school and had trouble finding them!
