This is NOT an unusual process. Don't be worried (unless you have a past/personality to worry about). It's a common practice in many of the larger systems that if no active knows you or of you personally, for actives to try to track down someone who does (through friends, family, co-workers, etc.) and to get to know a bit more about you. During chapter discussion, often it will be something like Q: "Does anyone know Rhonda Rushee?" A: "Oh, she's from Greekville? My brother's girlfriend went to high school there while Rhonda was there I'll give her a call..." It's just another opportunity for those who know you well to let the chapter know what a wonderful person you are!
