I seem to recall that Edward (when it was the first guy who played him) supposedly died quite awhile ago, and then, wonder of soapland, he returned after many years away. Lila used to communicate with him when he was "dead" by talking to his portrait. They never did explain why she could talk to his spirit/ghost/whatever you want to call it when he wasn't really dead...
