wichita state?

Hey there,
I'm transferring to Wichita State this fall and am hoping to go greek! Previously, I went to Univ. of Kansas, which seemed to have a pretty large and competitive system. I'm wondering how WSU compares. I'm a 21 y/o sophomore, 3.4 gpa, volunteer experience, etc, and am wondering about my chances. It seems to me that WSU has a smaller, more casual system, am I right? Also, I'm not a size 2, more like 20. I'm just wanting some advice, info, discussion i suppose. I've been wanting to go greek fo some time now, if anyone remembers, i tried the ZTA colony at KU. Anyhoo, I think that this may be my best shot. I look forward to hearing from some of you. Thanks!

I don't think any of us are really qualified to speak on your chances - however, I doubt you would be released on grades alone!

It's so funny that you're transferring there - when I was looking at schools to transfer to, I was trying to look at schools that also had Gamma Phi chapters, and I remember being all excited about that one because it has penguins for a local mascot!

Check out Betarulz thread about fraternity rush. There are some Kansas people posting there. Someone may be able to give you some insite for Wichita (where I was born)! I wish I could remember something about it, but all my friends went to KU or
K State, and you are right, KU is pretty competative. Have you tried a search on Wichita or Kansas under Rush or Greek Life?

I am from Kansas, and know a little bit about Greek Life at Wichita State. Their is a SAE chapter at WSU so my chapter visits there quite a bit. The greek system seems to be pretty strong, but it is not to competitive. It seems that everyone who is interested finds a house for them. My recommendation is to check out Alpha Phi, I have met several of their members and they all seem really cool and down to earth. I think you have a really good chance of finding a house to join.

I really can't add any thing much more that hasn't been said...I don't really know that much about WSU or the greek system except that they have a Beta Chapter there.

I wouldn't imagine that you'd have any difficulties finding a chapter that was a great match for you, especially since youre only a sophomore, and have good grades and experiences.

Wow, I didn't know that! I do recall several who had parents that attended or graduated from Kansas colleges had some sort of Greek connection. I guess those would have been locals considering the time. Plus, the crowd I ran with ALL ended up in a GLO. I just never realized how strong the system would be at WSU but the way you explained it makes perfect sense. Very interesting!

Hi JAM -- yes, the sororities at WSU have a long history. A couple of examples: the Delta Delta Delta chapter was formed from a local called Sorosis, which was founded in 1897 (back when WSU was Fairmount College), and the Delta Gamma chapter was formed from the local Alpha Tau Sigma, founded in 1909. I'll see if I can find out similar historical info aboout Gamma Phi and Alpha Phi.

JAM and others: OK, here's some history about the Gamma Phi Beta chapter at WSU. Like DDD and DG, it was formed from a petitioning local, Pi Kappa Psi. I don't know when the local was first established, but it obviously existed for some time because when Gamma Phi installed the chapter in 1958 there were 69 alumnae initiated in addition to 48 members of the local, according to Gamma Phi's book "The Gift from Syracuse."

Yay! I always like to hear about other chapters that came from a long history. I'm going to have to dig out my book, Legacy of Gamma Phi Beta, and see what they say about that chapter.

exlurker, that is so cool! Thanks for the info. I feel like GeekyPenguin about long histories. Kind of makes me proud of good old Kansas-still my favorite place and in my heart, always "home".

OK, I believe Apha Phi at WSU was formed from the local Epsilon Kappa Rho, which was established in 1928 -- so, like the other NPC chapters there, it has a long history.
