You should make it to Louisville for the Derby! It's a great time and Louisville consistently does an outstanding job with all things Derby. Describing it as 'Mardi Gras with horses' is right on target! Many people do come into town for the events, and yes, some celebrities treat it as a 'personal appearance' for fees. Nothing new about that.
U of L used to host a huge Derby Hostel over Derby weekend (it was at the old soccer field and there were people who came back to camp out every year.) I worked it a for a few years and it was quite the experience!
Trust me, Mint Juleps are really horrific tasting!! Wonder if Thunder will get cancelled this year due to our current pre-war situation? We'll be in Louisville in a couple of weeks and I can't wait! I'm not a U of L fan, but my hometown is an outstanding city, worthy of a visit whether it's Derby Week or not!
