Everyone is pushing for abstinence when teaching sex ed, but it just ain't happening, people!! I read a journal article about teens and sex for a human behavior class and I was shocked to learn what middle school kids are doing!! The FRAT is doing mentoring programs at a high school and a jr high school here in the city and on Friday we had a discussion about sex with some 14-15 year old "at risk" boys. We talked about sex, the normal project Alpha talk (STD's , the responsibilities of fatherhood, and the ways to prevent a new generation of "rolling stones"-let's see whose up on their black culture with that reference ) I introduced the idea about the intention of our sexuality and the proper spiritiual context for sex, citing the Genesis accounts of creation of humanity and matrimony. Then I asked then if they thought that the girls they were "messing with" and the sex that they were having was really showing forth all that God has for them in their sexuality? Were their "experiences," that they were so eager to share, worth all of the consequences they were and could experience? There was utter silence. One boy stated that we gave them a lot to think about and I replied that's all education is supposed to do, enlighten your lives and inform your decisions.

Many kids are having sex because they do not know that they don't have to. With all of the misinformation about sex that they see everyday, I see a generation of young people yearning for more information on the subject, both biological, intellectual, and spiritual. Abstinence is not even considered by most kids as an option. An empowered sexuality education class will equip kids with all the information that they need about the subject. That same boy that said he had a lot to think about also stated that he didn't know you could get herpes from just laying down with a girl, and that certain forms of it were incurable, but yet he has sex . Other boys thought that AIDS came from Africa because the people over there are "so dirty" (these are black boys mind you ). Most of the boys didn't think that abstinence was possible, but most of them saw it as the best thing for them (which is a start). Now we have to teach them to love themselves enough to allow for abstinence to be possible in their own lives. An empowered sexuality ed class will not just say sex is bad, don't do it (because the truth is that sex is beautiful) . It will empower kids to arrive at the best possible decision about sex for them, and benefit us all.
