Ancient Advisor

I feel like I am on here all the time asking for help...but I feel this is important!!! My chapter advisor is an older alum (not from our chapter). She has taken away a lot of our fun "rituals" such as serenading, etc. I feel like we are limited to what we can do...she says no to A LOT of our planned activities and to some of the themes for our mixers/socials. I feel like she wants us to be a mature, older chapter, but we are mostly freshmen and sophomores, and while we are mature we still like to have FUN!!!! I feel like we are not having as much fun as I hear about from other chapters and other organizations. I am sooo jealous when I talk to other greeks and then I find out that we used to do these fun things before we got this advisor. What can I do?!? I know this sounds mean, but is there any way to get a new advisor...one who is younger?!?

Jenny - how old is she? (Beware, if you say 35 I will be offended!! ) From what chapter - I know that some of the older chapters are on the conservative side.

You can PM me if you want.

I know how you feel...we have many things (like seranading) that we can't do either (which by the way National got rid of offically(it isn't "lady like"))...so we find alternatives...
We can't go to the bar for Senior wills.... so we have it at a place that HAS a bar but is also a pizza place.
Sure I'm jealous of all the chapters on campus that have Nationals that aren't as strict... but you find ways around things....

Serenades?

OK, we never had it at my school, but what exactly does serenading entail? From the posts I've read about it on here it doesn't seem like something that would be unladylike. (unless you are singing/dressing like Christina Aguilera, of course )

serenading is just when all the sisters go around and sing songs to the fraternities. the songs are picked by the sisters and if they want to perform them its up to them. i agree that it doesnt seem unladylike...i think it is something fun for the sisters to do!!! i feel like its just like chanting...but who knows?!? the only reason our chapter doesnt do it, is because one night our "ancient advisor" went with the sisters and she didnt like what they were doing. i wish things were different...but all you can do is try to work around it!!!

Sheesh. what's next, we can't be in Greek Olympics because we might get grass stains on our butts? This is a sorority, you are supposed to be having some silly fun occasionally, not just meetings and community service.

When policies are put in place that make us look anti-social or like we think we're above what the rest of the campus does, I think that harms our image and rush efforts far more than looking "unladylike" ever could.

i totally agree

i agree with what you are saying...i just wish there were some way to change the way it is!!! the other organizations on campus arent very fond of us and you pointing out that it may make us seem like we are better than them opens my eyes. im pretty sure they see things that way...and it sucks. i have a few friends in the other organizations and i would hate to think that they think we hold ourselves to be better than them. ggggrrrr!!! i wish there were some way to change this... any suggestions are welcome...

Sorry if I sounded overly harsh...I know that the "in-charge" people only have our best interests at heart, but sometimes I think we are too cautious about some things. Someone saw one thing one time she didn't like, complained, and it gets banned.

If you really feel that things like that are harming your campus relations, take it up with your standards advisor or your district facilitator. Part of our new structure is trying to get more sisters involved and that includes collegians too. In the meantime, try to foster better Panhellenic relations...maybe suggest a progressive dinner or something like that (go from house to house for each course). By the way, I saw y'all's house at the 2000 convention and it is adorable!

The "IDEA" of seranading isn't what nationals says is unladylike...it's the songs that are typically sung at a seranade... If you went seranading singing your chapter/rush songs there's nothing wrong with that...BUT those aren't the songs people sing. They ususally sing raunchy beer, sex and insult to other chapter songs... I know we have a songbook full of ones I wouldn't be proud to sing.

Nationals has also made new rules regarding what you can get for socials etc. The lC came and visited and told the social chair what is and what is not acceptable. WE are no longer able to buy Flasks, shot glasses, or any other class that one may be able to drink out of. There was even talk that certain candle holders wouldn't be allowed bc you could drink alcohol out of them. That is what the VP of recruitment said but the lc told our social chair that candle holders are ok.
anyway I am no longer a member of ASA due to financial reasons.
Serenading usually involves "dirty" songs, but good ones too. The guys usually are much worse. In the fall serenading was part of Dedication Days and that is when our new girls are introduced and in the spring serenading is the sendoff for our seniors.

I'm really sorry that ya'll are having a conflict with ya'll's advisor. Sheila (as always) had a great suggestion about going to your District Facilitator and or Standards Chairman I hope things get better for ya!

Lana -

I think we've had that no wine glasses, etc rule for a while. So at formals (the only thing we had favors for) we switched to boxer shorts. Yah...no drinking...but a dude walking around with his boys a-swingin was fine. LOL!

You can sing songs that are clever and funny without getting outright dirty...run that by the powers that be. I honestly don't see what the problem is if you keep it clean, especially if the rest of the groups can do it. We had some interesting ones too, but they didn't get sung outside the confines of the chapter house.

Well, I'm off to do shots out of my candle holder !!
