Yeah, it'll take a while to get use to...
Also, if you want to use code for your actual message, you have to make sure that your vB Code is marked Enhanced Mode... (look right above the smilies box, when you're posting a message)
I always check my message to see if I did the coding right, so you can always preview your message before you send it too... Just click on Preview Reply before you Submit it...
If your colors didn't come out right, or if the font's not right... then just check your codes and make sure you have everything.
ex: [font = century gothic][size = 3][color = purple] blah, blah, blah...[ / font][ / color][ / size]
and once again... don't forget to take out the spaces.
