You are giving people here and elsewhere way too much credit.
Name calling, character bashing/assassination is the preferred method of argument for most people.
We all have experienced it, and its usually done behind-the-back. Or in-the-back?
Its the one friend that always seems to stir up drama and shit and make people choose sides.
Its the people in the chapter that hate someone, or are bitter and resentful, and so destroy someone in private until that person has no public standing either. A lot of chapter elections are won that way. And real world ones.
Its the EX that speaks so badly about you that people actually hate you when they meet you.
Or the enemy that does the same thing.
The sad thing is: It works. Thats why people do it.
If they can discredit the messenger they know that people will disbelieve the message. Kind of sad, but there it is.

If I were talking to one of my children, I would tell them to grow up. And then, given the topic, I would hope they live long enough to do that.
