One of our local sororities does something similar to this. They're required to carry around this wooden book that they must wear slung over their body with their letters on it, but if anybody asks what is is they are supposed to say "I don't know what you're talking about, what's wrong with you?" It's really weird because obviously we all know it's a pledge book.
