Keep your lips sealed. Unless you personally see a cancelled check from the account of XYZ AS AN ENTITY, you have no proof that they are "co-sponsoring" the event.
I don't mean to question your boyfriend's bros, but the money could be from an individual alum (some alums do wacky things like that), a company where an alum works, etc...and it got distorted to "XYZ is co-sponsoring and buying the beer."
If you are very close to any of the group's members - I mean as a friend, not an acquaintance - you could mention something to the effect of you heard this and don't want them to get busted. Or it could be, that if they are on a downward spiral, they have decided to do their own version of the Animal House homecoming parade and go out big.
