Well ...

I know a couple of friends who went to W&M for grad school and really liked it. I've seen the campus, too, and it's gorgeous. However, I don't really know anything about GMU, so I can't compare them.

But I do think that if you have the choice between a commuter and residential school, you should pick the residential. Commuter schools are great if you need to live close to home for personal or financial reasons, but at a residential school you'll get a much better non-academic experience. It's not just Greek life; your fellow students will all be more involved. There will be more opportunities to get involved in things and to just hang out and have fun.

The most important education you get (especially if you're doing liberal arts) is outside the classroom. Sad to say, as I am an English major myself, getting a degree in that doesn't qualify you for anything except going to grad school, which is great if it's what you really want. But if you want to go straight to work, it's your leadership and club activities outside the classroom that will get you a job.
