I read an article (link below) on the pitfalls of online invite/event services like Partiful, Evite, Paperless Post, etc possibly creating a new situation where people don't take the invitation and RSVP seriously enough. As a result, people will RSVP "yes" and then simply not show up. Or they will assume that it's ok to skip out because they can see on the evite that others are planning to go so they won't be missed. Or not want to RSVP yes because they don't see enough people RSVPing yes and they don't want to be the only person there.
I have seen this situation play out with my alumnae chapter to an extent. It's disheartening to have people say that they plan to attend something...only to decide that it wasn't a priority to them at the last minute. I've ended up in some awkward situations where I'll have 8 people RSVP to attend an alumnae chapter event and then it was just me, one other exec officer, and one new person who showed up. That poor new person understandably feels weird and then doesn't attend another event again.
The article I am linking is a bit long. Mind you, the event the young woman describes may not have been seen as a formal enough event to her friends (pizza outside in a park?) but there are some interesting points made. The article describes that RSVP culture is changing and makes it easier to back out of commitments.
