I don't think I could have dealt with a cold sleeping porch. My chapter was unhoused, and I was very happy when I landed a single in my dorm.
I had some friends in a coed fraternity that had a sleeping porch. To get around the problem of a zillion alarms going off at various times, they had a rotating job called "arousal" (yes, they called it that). One person would sleep in a separate bedroom with an alarm clock that went off at maybe 5am. The evening before, each member would sign up and list what time they wanted to be woken up. The "arousal" person would go from bed to bed and wake people up and quietly say, for example, "It's 7:30". That way, the people who wanted to sleep until, say, 8:30 or 9 wouldn't be disturbed. Each member also had a room in the house (so, maybe, 4 people to a room) where they had a desk and a closet and dresser.
