Has there been previous expansion attempts that have never panned out?

Oh, they've been looking for about a zillion years with no takers. I get that. It's almost all commuters.

That tends to happen. My alma mater must have been an outlier, as it was a huge commuter school yet had a vibrant greek system.

Today we recolonized our Alpha Xi chapter at West Virginia University with 30 founding fathers. This chapter was dormant since 1943 (80 years). A huge WELCOME BACK!!!!!

Why do so many groups struggle at Cornell?
I am a Cornell alumna and my daughter is a current undergraduate. When I was an undergraduate in the 1980s, and shortly after, there were several colonizations in a short period of time, approximately one every two years. All of those organizations, including those you mentioned above, have closed. Phi Sigma Sigma and Phi Mu are more recent chapters, I believe both opened sometime in the 2010s. Most of the sororities at Cornell are long established chapters and those are not struggling. I believe only one organization that has opened since 1982 has prospered. It is the new chapters that struggle, they have successful colonies, then the chapters struggle after a short period of time when being the new group is no longer attractive. In my opinion, the question should be why it is difficult to establish a new group at Cornell.

Alpha Delta Chi at UCLA will be closing at the end of the semester. This is actually the Alpha chapter of the sorority.

Founded in 1925, the chapter was awfully close to their 100 year anniversary.

Provisional chapter

Phi Mu Delta has established a provisional chapter, Mu Omega, at Temple University. There are 15 founding fathers for this new chapter. The installation was conducted by brothers from the Phi Mu Delta chapters at Susquehanna University and Stockton University.

Sigma Phi Epsilon has had their recognition revoked by the University of Tennessee. Action was taken due to violations of student code of conduct.
