Rush question

Hi everyone I am new to this site. I recently thought about rushing a sorority for fall 2016. Each house at my school has there own rush GPA requirements. The minimum is 2.5 for some and others are 2.75. I have a 2.62 and might end the semester with a 2.77. So my question is if I don't end up with a 2.75 should I still rush since I qualify for other houses? I know a girl who rushed her freshmen year and the GPA for all incoming freshmen is 3.0 and she was asked back to 6/12 and ended up at a house even though her GPA was a 2.9. Should I still try or just not think about it? Thank you in advance.

P.S will they look at my improvement over the last semester? My GPA first semester wasn't good but this semester I am predicted to earn over a 3.0, but my cumulative still brings me down.

Just to clarify, you are a freshman now and talking about doing formal rush first semester sophomore year, right?

Also, is the A for Alabama, Alaska, Arizona or Arkansas?

Yes I am planning on it the first semester of my sophomore year and it is for Arizona.

My honest advice is to work as hard as you can this semester to get it higher than a 3.0 to push your cumulative up as high as possible.

Thank you for responding. I just would like to get the opinion that if I don't get it that high, should I still try or not? Would there be a chance I could be like the girl who had a 2.9 who needed a 3.0 (which didn't qualify her for any houses but she still got one). Because as a college student I still qualify for 5/12 houses, the others ask for a 2.75.

(Sorry if my wording isn't making much sense)

Just "qualifying" with your GPA doesn't mean one of them will take you. But none of them will take you if you don't sign up for recruitment! We can't answer your question. You can either try or not. That's up to you. But be OPEN to whatever offers you get because they will most likely be few. You can't be picky and prissy about your options.

I know having the minimum GPA doesn't automatically get you in. I am just wondering if you or someone else were in my current situation would you actually still go for it, since I am very excited .But some of you know more about it then I do I am asking if they do really like me and I am .1 away will they still consider me? Perhaps they will take my grade improvement into account. I know there is always a possibility of not getting in even with a 4.0.

(I can sign up for recruitment all the way up to August 1st so that's not really an issue. )

A word to the wise: you can't compare yourself to anyone else - you really don't know what her (the woman you describe) actual circumstances were. A LOT of factors go into membership selection. I wouldn't presume to comment on what any chapter's membership selection policies are (including my own) because that is privileged and confidential information. So I can't tell you whether or not you have a chance. I am comfortable saying this: Arizona recruitment is competitive and the first cuts after Open House round are for grades. And my Panhellenic sister Titchou already gave you the best answer we can give.

That said, here are my suggestions for a successful recruitment. Get your GPA as high as you can this semester. Get recommendations that will explain your situation. Make friends with women in various chapters. Don't get a reputation in the dorms or at fraternity parties. Read the threads on GC on rushing as a sophomore - lots of great advice already given. Keep your options open and be positive and friendly to every single chapter. Sophomores can and do get bids! But your grades really need to be much higher than they currently are.

There are NO BAD CHAPTERS at Arizona, despite the horrible tent talk. If you truly keep an open mind, there is a good possibility that you'll get a bid as a sophomore. But you have to get that GPA up. I wish you the best of luck.

If it is at all possible, over the summer can you re-take one of the classes from first semester in which you did poorly? Raising that semester's GPA over the summer would help. If not, can you take an easy summer class or two two raise you cumulative GPA? There has to be some fun elective or an entry level class in your major that would be easier to study for if you're just taking that class and maybe one other?

But getting back to the point at hand, if you want to be in a sorority, you need to rush. Period. We can't guarantee your outcome. If you had stellar grades we still couldn't guarantee your outcome. As far as your grades, do work on them and you've gotten good advice. But more importantly than that, be open to every chapter at Arizona. Seriously every one. Even the one that you think you'd die a painful death if you joined. If you want to be in a sorority, you likely can be, even with iffy grades. But you can't be all precious about only being in certain ones, especially when the most competitive chapters on campus are going to cut you based on grades. And being a sophomore makes you a less prime candidate as well.

My advice, along with studying, research all the sororities at the local and national level. Find something to love about each one before rush starts. When those cuts come it will hurt, but look at the awesome sororities you still have left! Sure, this one or that one may have some (temporary) issues they're struggling with, but you can deal with that since they are such a great group overall, and for the rest of your life.
