This is probably old news from those in the know but I just heard that total would now be recalculated every academic term instead of just after recruitment. Could this change how many chapters would be recruiting informally the semester following formal recruitment? If the chapters work really hard at retention, I can see this as a way to level the playing field. I may have missed this posted somewhere but it was news to me.

That's a better idea anyway,.to accommodate people who drop (and we know there are chapters with lots of those). It would have made more sense for recalculations to be done after initiation (assuming there's a maximum pledge time) in the first place.

I hadn't actually heard this, but that's what I was talking about in another thread as what made the most sense to me. So as to not have a false total and force chapters to informally recruit that don't really need to when it turns out the average is actually lower cause of drops and graduations, etc. I think it will lead to a more accurate view of chapter sizes, which is also good for expansion considerations.

when in doubt, always go to the source. From npcwomen.org, a snippet from the update document dated October 2015:

With RFM, we have seen chapters stabilize and on most campuses have seen chapters increase in size overall. NPC adopted new total policies in October 2015 to allow chapters to achieve parity as quickly as possible. Total is now to be automatically adjusted every regular academic term. This is to be done no later than 72 hours following bid distribution in the academic term that primary recruitment is held and within one week (no more than seven days) from the start of the academic term(s) in which primary recruitment is not held.
College Panhellenics can use one of the following methods to determine total:
1. Median chapter size
2. Average chapter size
3. Largest chapter size (recommended for College Panhellenics with three or fewer chapters)
Adjusting total every regular academic term (i.e., fall and spring terms for semester schools or fall, winter and spring terms for quarter schools) allows for the most accurate reflection of true Panhellenic size.

Take the time to read the entire document (five pages total, but not all text) because it will give you a much better picture of what's being discussed. There's information on upperclass quota, for example.

So in other words, every chapter should have a wish list at all times of women your chapter has determined to be biddable and grab them ASAP when you get back to school. NPC should probably reiterate in that paragraph that bids can only be given when school is in session and that a bid isn't valid until it goes through the Greek life office. Just sayin.
