just to fill ya in, liz - the "volunteers" represents the Volunteer Corps, used in the military (think civil war era) - ie the 235th Volunteers. They were not professional soldiers - just regular people who joined to fight, generally with just a rifle etc. The movie "The Patriot" is a good example of the role of the Volunteers in battle etc. Tennessee, having a big civil-war background, goes with the Volunteers for this reason. The meaning behind the volunteers is that is our state's nickname. The nickname originated during the War of 1812, in which the volunteer soldiers from Tennessee, serving under Gen. Andrew Jackson, displayed marked valor in the Battle of New Orleans. I'm thinking that Tennessee sent a lot more volunteers to the war than any other state. That's why people started calling it "The Volunteer State."
