If she had already been a member of any org it would not have been an issue at all. Doing this at beginning of first term would not have been smart. Wherever her heart lies, once POTUS is out of office she'll be free to pursue.

Only partially true. She did accept, but was never initiated.
In 2008, at the Centennial Boule Public Program, the International President Barbara McKenzie read a letter from Barack Obama which had a PS saying that Michelle was flattered and accepted their offer of honorary membership. (Source: I actually watched the live stream of the Public Program; the letter was also printed in the 2010 edition of the AKA history book.)
The crowd went wild and the media ran with the story as if she had already been initiated. Then the PR people for the campaign stepped in with this non-exclusive foolishness.

And this double talk is why incorrect information continues to be repeated as fact. A PS in an anniversary journal letter from her husband the President is not acceptance. You're a member you know what needs to be done to complete offer. Being offered the opportunity and actually going through with said opportunity are two different things.

That's not what it was. But I feel you.

Malia Obama Sends Acceptance Letter To Harvard
Bonus lulz in the comments: all the people who think that this is an attempted “fake” rather than satire. And extra-special bonus lulz- the one person who apparently thinks it’s real.

So my original question still stands: how would politics dictate a sorority choice when neither of her parents is involved with the NPHC world?
It's likely a moot point but I still would be interested in hearing how that works.
My shameless plug is for my alma maters, both of which she visited.

It most likely wouldn't. NPHC choices are often "felt" and pursued for a variety of reasons -- a person's affinity for what they know of what the org stands for, familial association, or others factors I won't discuss here.
But it's not overtly political in most instances.

It's an actual letter, confirmed by Abraham Lincoln the Vampire Hunter.

So, this was a topic of much excitement:

Since the Brown early decision deadline is November 1, maybe she came back for another visit?

USC Scores--UCLA Scores
DTD may have been misinformed about his comment regarding UCLA, a part of the University of California public system, and USC, a private 125 year old research university. I did an extensive report on this topic and tracked the scores. For some years SC's scores have been above UCLA's.
UCLA's purpose is to serve the citizens of California. Most of their students are from the state. Out of state enrollees are limited. USC draws from over 51 countries and particularly the states of Texas, New York, Illinois, Washington and New Jersey.
The scores and information below is from the UCLA Common Data Set and the USC admission site and freshmen profile.
UCLA publishes admitted scores on their site. It is necessary to view their Common Data Set to find scores of enrolled students.
Here are the official numbers from the sites for 2014-2015:
USC Enrolled Freshmen-----2014
ACT Composite 29-33
UCLA Enrolled Freshmen----2014
ACT Composite 25-32
UCLA Enrolled Freshmen--2014
SAT Scores
CR-570-710
M-600-750
W-590-730
USC Enrolled Freshmen--2014
SAT Scores
CR-620-720
M-660-760
W-640-740
Other numbers of interest:
Faculty/Student Ratio UCLA 1/17
Faculty/Student Ratio USC 1/9
In the class that just entered SC here are the latest scores for enrolled freshmen:
ACT Composite: 30-33
SAT Composite: 1980-2200
In the class of 2949 14% are the first in the family to enter college and 17% are Pell Grant recipients.
UCLA holds the record for the most applicants of any U.S. university for spots in their freshmen class.
For the report mentioned earlier I compiled copies of scores for both universities from 2008 to the present.
