Oh I had to do this all the time!! Most of the papers or lab write ups were too large to fit on a disk so being able to send an email to yourself was a saving grace. Also people always broke the disk drives in the lab (how hard is it to use a disk drive?!?!) or the lab computers were notorious for corupting disks that emailing yourself a file was a common practice.
