Two things interest me on this topic.
First, our son who starts college next month got very nice scholarship offers from two out-of-state, public (state) supported colleges. The aid offers from the "big time" private schools were a joke -- even for a National Merit Scholar.
Second, for the past several years, we as a family have gotten fairly sizable returns from state income tax due to The Tabor Amendment (kinda like Prop. 13 in California). So, in comes a new governor with promises of a big tax cut, which he delivers. Now, we have HUGE deficits, including big budget cuts for state supported universities.
I wasn't and Economics major, but to pass a tax cut as the market is beginning to falter may be politically beneficial, but is stupid in the long run. It's pretty much the same story in the Federal government.
I just hate it when good politics make for hardships for the citizens.
