As you prepare for Recruitment, there is an important conversation you need to have about paying for your future sorority lifestyle. A really good discussion is here: Click Me

A link to last the Ole Miss chapters' published costs listed toward the end of Post #1 in this thread.

dress for preference party

My daughter has pick out a dress for pref that is a particular sorority color. She now thinks she needs to wear a black dress. Her friends told her that she shouldn't show favoritism. She looks very good in the dress that she picked out. Do we need to look for a black dress?

What Titchou said. Plus, there is no guarantee that she will be preffing the sorority that has that color.

That's what I told her. I wanted her to hear it from y'all. You all have been through this more than me and both she and I trust your opinions. Keep that good advise coming!

Agree with others -- I think it would be almost impossible to avoid all colors of all chapters. Not that she would, but it might is a good idea during the rest of recruitment to avoid clothing with any obvious chapter symbols, like owls or anchors or whatever.

It probably is a good idea to have a black dress on hand just for general purposes. And a white one too.

And don't forget that navy can look gorgeous too....that's what color I wore if I remember correctly (can't believe it's been 18 years!). And navy looks great with a red cardigan for fall football games too! Hotty Toddy!

Yes, every young woman at Ole Miss needs to have football attire that is Ole Miss Blue and Ole Miss Red. We like to wear the same color as the football team on gameday to show support. The effect is breathtaking, both in The Grove and in Vaught-Hemingway stadium.

football colors

Have they decided what color theory are wearing for each game? Is it posted somewhere?

Tell her to get a bright orange dress. I'm pretty sure that's the only color not used by any of the NPC sororities.

Seriously though, there are so many PNMs that the actives won't really care what colors everyone is wearing. Again, it's pretty much impossible to avoid NPC colors altogether. Just make sure she doesn't show up dressed in pink from head to toe with quatrefoil earrings and a lion necklace.

As crazy as this sounds, yes, some girls do chose the color of their pref dresses based on which sorority they are hoping to receive a bid from. This practice is especially popular with in state girls who already have a good idea what house they will likely get a bid from. (Then they cross their fingers and say a prayer and hope for the best)

Best advice, mom to mom, buy your daughter a little black dress or perhaps a navy one as mentioned earlier. A Little Black Dress is the best investment as she will likely attend many formals where the LBD will come in handy. My daughter wore her pref dress to three fraternity formals and one of her sororities date parties. Because it was nice and basic, nobody could really tell she was wearing the same dress over and over again. She just changed her shoes and jewelry. You can't do that with a bold color dress!

Save the color dress for skit parties and wear a neutral color to pref. it's better safe than sorry.

Black with a bit of color might work! One of my daughters has ebony black hair so didn't want an all-black dress on top of that. She found one that had red accents and that worked out beautifully!

Y'all are telling her to get a black dress, but I read it as they already have a dress that her daughter looks good in that is a color. If she looks good and feels good in this dress, she should wear it.

Besides, black IS a sorority color, and Theta has a chapter at Ole Miss.

Going to pref parties in a light blue dress: OK.
Going to pref parties in a light blue dress with dark blue scarf, pumps and headwrap, a necklace with a key pendant and owl earrings: Not OK.

And ditto what amIblue said.
