I would be curious to read the actual bills, the one that passed and the one that failed. I would imagine they have no practical purpose, and the first was more intended to generate a PR crisis than to fix the problem with actual, deliverable solutions.

All that being said, the Alabama Greek community is the most backward in the country and needs to get with the 21st century.

Katie Smith, the student senator who drafted the earlier resolution, felt it was because of pressure from the Machine that her bill to integrate Greeks failed in March.

The new bill's language was left unadjusted and passed Thursday "with an overwhelming number of votes on the floor," the Crimson White reported.

It doesn't require any immediate action by the university or Greek houses, rather, it simply voices support for the goal of integration.

Typical student government at work. Needing to feel important, but not really doing anything specific to drive change.

Still...why was it so hard to pass the bill the first time? I'm guessing racism played a large role, but maybe there were some who recognized the bill had no practical solutions.
