Could he mention combining say, his love of neuroscience with an interest in a foreign language? There's been a massive expansion of the brain sciences divisions recently--maybe that will make it clear that he's doing his research? I remember interviewing kids (from the NYC area) who couldn't answer that question specifically! :-(
