Just as notions of gender vary by culture and generation, friendships vary. I've seen those old photos of men holding hands and sitting close to their friends. Women aren't the only nurturers (I believe it is more social than biological and hormonal, anyway) and aren't the only people secure enough to express love in different ways. But it requires people not being ostracized by society for expressions as well as a secure self-identity.
