How awful.

I read a description of the ritual / hazing on Wikipedia. *smh* How could you do something like that to someone who is soon to be your brother?

Did they wait? The article I saw on cnn.com indicated that the brothers brought Deng to the hospital "early Sunday morning" and that the hazing took place "in the early morning hours".

As to why people do sometimes wait - it's probably fear. Some of you may remember the story of Scott Krueger, the FIJI pledge at MIT who died from alcohol poisoning. When Scott passed out (with a .4 BAC), nobody called 911 right away, probably because they didn't want to get in trouble - I guess they were hoping he'd just sleep it off and be ok in the morning. Only when Scott choked on his own vomit did anyone call the cops.

I read on NBC that they waited a bit before taking him to the hospital.

Deng suffered a major brain injury, but his frat brothers did not immediately call for help.Instead, they took him into the house, put him by the fire, changed his clothes and Googled his symptoms, police said in a search warrant.

It was an hour or more before they drove the unresponsive victim to a hospital, where doctors put him on life support. Deng, who graduated from the elite Bronx High School of Science, died Monday morning.
