Things you got rid of that you still wish you had

I'd have to say my comic book collection. I don't even know what happened to it. I'm pretty sure a friend of my brother's who was/is an addict who my folks were letting live with them sold them.

Mom33 and her brothers had quite a few comics (this is back in the 1930s - 1940s). When they outgrew them, Grandpa33 just threw them all out/burned them. Mom said one time she thought there may have been a Superman #1 in there

Then again, that's what makes things so collectible in the first place.

We gave the combined Barbie collection that belonged to my daughter, my sister, and me to my 3 nieces. All three of us had a lot of wonderful memories of playing with all this Barbie stuff, and this seemed like a great way to clean house and pass the joy to younger girls. Then one of my nieces complained/tattled to me that my sister-in-law had sold everything to a friend! I know that she had returned a couple presents for my nieces and nephews for cash, so I've been creative with buying things she can't return. I never thought she'd sell these things.

I did tell her this was upsetting to me (and everyone else involved) on several levels. Her daughters were upset, and my daughter was upset because she thought she'd be seeing her cousins playing with her Barbies. I had sewn many Barbie outfits when I was little, and those were gone, too.

Lesson learned: Never give away anything of sentimental value to someone who may not appreciate it, because it's upsetting if they don't value it as you do (which they very well may not).

Oh gosh...I have no idea. Lots of things.

I will say, although I still have my Samantha doll from the American Girls Collection, I wish I would have taken better care of her. They have discontinued her and if I had taken better care of her, she'd probably be worth a lot more than she is now.

Ditto. Why did I undo my Addy doll's hair? I will never be able to braid like her braids were done originally.

There were two sets of earrings that I lost that I am still sad about. Both had originally belonged to my aunt and were really detailed silver posts. A boyfriend lost one pair. The other pair were snowflakes and I lost one in a pile of snow. I was running to an 8am class and tried to put them on. Poor decision.

Regarding the baseball cards, don't feel too bad. I went through my husband's MASSIVE stack, and after hours and hours and hours of inventorying them (never got it finished, but got far enough to know with confidence) there wasn't squat in the pile. While there ARE very valuable cards, I wouldn't assume your collection was worth anything.

The only things I wish I still had were items that were ruined, not given/thrown away. My Mom made a ceramic Christmas tree when I was little. You know the ones, about 16 inches tall, lights all over it. Hers was painted in a very different way from the ones you've seen a million of and it was always my favorite Christmas decoration. When my sister, lazy disciplinarian, let her old enough to know better kids play in the formal living room, they knocked it off a table and broke it. OK, I wish I had FIXED it instead of allowing it to just be broken.

My husband also broke a really pretty small decorative plate I got while in Martinique. That one wouldn't have been repairable. But about right now I'd take the plate over him. But that's another story

While we were at camp, my mother would go through our stuff and get rid of whatever she felt we were too old for. No matter how we would hide it, she would find it except for one Barbie case that I somehow managed to keep hidden every year and still own.

I kept my games in super condition and I regret that she gave them away--they are worth tons now.

I regret giving away some of the smocked outfits I made for my kids. Now that my kids are adults, I would have loved to been able to pass some of those precious outfits down when they have their kids (no grandkids yet). Oh well, maybe I need to practice smocking again!
