My daughter said she was told she couldn't bring anything (even in a cell in a Ziploc) to the water parties and she thinks it's the same for the next events as well. Why is there so much conflicting information I wonder? Well, I guess she needs to make sure she is as ready as she can be before walking out the door.

Wow. Don't know, Panhellenic is not my area. Perhaps she should send an email to the Office of Greek Affairs?

You can bring things in a ziplock, but we are not allowed to bring our cellphones or watches or timers or anything like that at all, they have to stay in our rooms.

Ask your recruitment counselor. They will let you know.

I am afraid it is really too late to ask these questions. if you are not already completely prepared for recruitment, it is too late to ask now. If you are registered for rush, all of this has already been explained. If you are just curious, the first post on this thread is your complete and comprehensive reference.

I've asked a simple question merely seeking information. I am not a PNM. I am an alum who is unfamiliar with Convocation. There was no such thing when I went through Rush. I have read this thread and could not find out precisely what Convocation covered.

Convocation is a kick off meeting that PNMs attend with Panhellenic and the Greek Affairs staff. (Convocation: group of people formally assembled for a special purpose.) I've never attended one (I rushed 31 years ago) so can't tell you what exactly they cover.

I've never attended one at Ole Miss but have at other places. I'm certain that they've held some form of these since formal recruitment began. They talk about where to be, when to be there, put you in your RC groups, tell you what to wear, go over the rules.
That's about it. Nothing beyond what one would normally expect.

I apologize that I assumed you were a PNM. Bad, bad, bad!! Knowing context makes a big difference.

The PNMs have been meeting weekly with their Gamma Chis (Recruitment Counselors) since school started so they will have had some information already passed to them. This will be something additional plus perhaps a review of things already told/handed off. Still don't know exactly what will be said.
My Recruitment happened at LSU 31 years ago. I recall meeting with my Rush Counselor, idiot that she was, but do not recall any sort of convocation . . . if there was one it was obviously not memorable.

GCBB: According to am email sent to my daughter, Convocation is the kick off ceremony to start Recruitment. There will be two sessions, one for girls with last names between A-M and a second for girls with last names between N-Z. Not sure why the two different sessions...
The girls were told that the dress is "Sunday best".
At Ole Miss, they are also collecting school supplies for local schools. I think it is awesome that Panhellenic can turn this into a charity event to support the local school system. Way to go girls!!!

To further answer your question, I'm not sure what they will discuss, but the girls have been meeting with their Gamma Chi's for weeks. They already know where and when to meet during recruitment and what to wear. So I'm thinking it will be not much more than a speaker.
Here are a few answers to some of the other questions that were asked on here:
1. They are required to sleep in their assigned rooms in the residential halls throughout the whole week.
2. No phones or purses, but their Gamma Chis will have ziplock bags for their items. Everything must fit inside a small ziplock bag.

I went thru Rush before Mary Poppins. As we walked from house to house, we had to take care not to fall into dinosaur footprints. If there were a formal convocation, I have no recollection of it.
H2H, I would think "They are required to sleep in their assigned rooms in the residential halls throughout the whole week" a strange statement if I were not aware of moms who rent hotel rooms for the week. Be very quiet and you can hear those helicopter blades thump, thump, thumping away.
Thank you all for your answers to my questions. It was a term I was not familiar with in the context of Recruitment.

Every year I check this thread and every year I fear that I'll want to virtually reach out and strangle some of y'all. Ladies, take some deep breaths!
I went through Rush (sorry I'm not sorry -- it was rush when I went through) at Ole Miss in 1991. Back in the ice age, internet didn't exist and for that I'm thankful. I'm pretty sure if I would have read some of the messages here, then, I'd have never left my dorm room.
Some girls socialize. Some (many) men and women...PNMs have visited OM on weekends in the fall and spring prior to enrollment. These are sanctioned events. When it is mentioned that these are "party weekends" or "you should come for the "party that weekend", it likely means that it is a certain weekend at Ole Miss where there are many events taking place. Example, in the spring recruitment brunches were usually held on these weekends or certain football game weekends. These "party weekends" are more akin to "University-wide event (such as Red/Blue game), there are lots of things going on for all types, there are many specific sorority recruitment brunches, it will be fun, it'll be a great way for you to meet members, there will be lots of PNMs there as well -- come." These "party weekends" are more or less designed for these activities. Is that considered "dirty rushing" at Ole Miss? No. Why? No idea, WAOM (We Are Ole Miss -- google it).
Should girls invited to pre-recruitment parties drink? Maybe, maybe not. Do many people drink at these parties? Yes. Do some people get out of hand? Yes but I'd say it's the exception more than the rule. Do some drink responsibly? The majority, yes. Ole Miss has a party reputation. Many who enroll at this fine university, due so solely for this reason. Are these students easy to pick out? Usually. Do they make it through to sophomore year? Rarely.
If a PNM is offered alcohol at one of these parties, yes, I'd say it is a test. Not a test of chasteness/purity but likely a test of how one can handle oneself w/or w/o alcohol in social situations. Please stop nervous nelling that "OMG GIRLS ARE DRINKING BEFORE THEY ENROLL AND OMG THEY ARE DOOOOOOOMED". If y'all think a PNMs sorority bid fate rests solely on this criteria, you are naive.
Keep in mind that it'll all work out. My sister (blood) had the best advice when I went through: You'll end up in the house that is the best fit for you. You may not realize it at the time, but it'll work out. True words. Ladies and mothers: It will all be ok! PNMs will continue at the university, many (the majority?) will have successful college experiences whether or not they get into their first pick house. At the end of the day, remember why you are at OM: To gain an education. Maybe an education in underwater basket weaving, perhaps pharmacy, perhaps journalism. Any which way, don't waste your chance for a great education and an amazing college experience.
PNMs: If you do it right, OM will get in your blood and soul. It's cliche but true.
