Question...what happens to the QA's in bed rush?

I get the unhoused chapters having QA's, but if you're a QA to a housed chapter, where do you sleep? Do they say "Hey you're a QA, you're lucky to get a bid, but you're staying in the dorm - we don't have room for you!"?

Oh, I didn't take it like that at all! Just joining everyone else in our frustration of these young girls. No kidding!!!

I don't think QAs would exist, unless they know they have a sister living out for a reason (RA, study abroad, etc).

There's always change, girl drops out of college, transfers, tanks her grades, gets in a huge fight and flounces off in a huff, whatev. You can't estimate exactly how many girls will live in a year or two from now. I would guess the chapters have a few extra beds every year and they're glad for that little additional space.

Well, that's what I thought, but then there was some discussion upthread:

But at IU, wouldn't that mean there would be just that many more women who didn't get matched in the end?

I don't mean to be argumentative!! It just seems like the way this system is, we really can't fault the girls who drop out early, because ultimately quota wouldn't be any bigger than it is.

^^ This is how I understood it before, but then...

IU does use quota additions. So more women can be placed in the system with quota additions. They chapters who allow live outs can take QAs.

So is it only the unhoused chapters and the ones that allow live-outs that have QA's? Can they take an unlimited amount?

But even the ones that allow live-outs...the new members wouldn't be the live-outs, so they'd still have to have an EXACT number that would be in the PC, right? So, then true QA's wouldn't really exist?

So confused, just trying to understand.

Yes, IU is confusing. We have definitely earned our special snowflake status.

This past year, there were 3 or 4 chapters who took quota additions. One chapter took 14. Theoretically, the unhoused chapters could take as many QAs as they wanted. They do not have to worry about beds to fill.

The chapters with live out policies could also take QAs.

The only problem occurs with chapters who does not allow live outs. Yes, they do not have a place to house the QAs, however since quota is set so early in the year in bed rush, these chapters may decide to take a QA or two if they have transfers in December or girls who leave the chapter.

Thanks ISK. Not even sure why I really care to understand...I've never known anyone to go to IU, but it's just interesting to me.
RE: The bold above - see my question below. Do the chapters that allow live outs...if they get a QA (or 5) what happens to those NM's? I'm assuming that some upperclassmen made arrangements to live out and that's why they have spaces for NM's. But it's still an exact amount, right? If total is 100, and quota for that group is 25, but 5 seniors are living out...they know GOING INTO RUSH that their "real" quota (quota plus max # of QA's) is 30, right?

Seriously, I'm not sure why I'm trying to understand this, but I do find it weirdly fascinating...

The QA new members would move in, more upperclass girls would be able to live out.

And if the chapter does not allow live outs, they might be able to squeeze a couple extra women into a room. Or temporarily convert the guest room into a standard room, or a study lounge into a bedroom.

And some of these houses have sleeping porches, so if you can fit another bunk bed in, you are fine. You just add another woman into one of the study rooms/day rooms whatever you want to call them.

While I haven't seen every house at IU, I do know that many of the houses have a bit of flexibility.

This is what my chapter does--we convert the upstairs informal into a 6-way and there's a smaller room downstairs we can make into a 2-girl room. Outside of that, it just means that the 4-way HAS to be a 4-way. If we have a little flexibility, the 5-way may become a 4-way, a 4-way may become a 3-way, etc. etc. The beds are easy because we just put another few bunk beds into the cold/warm dorms.
