My student got released . She seemed to think that there's a chapter (she thought Sigma Kappa.... though obviously not) recolonizing this year? Anyone know about that? Did I miss something?

I don't think Bama is expanding this year, however Sigma Delta Tau is holding their recruitment (I believe) next week. If she checks the Bama SDT Facebook page she should find the info. she needs. They were hosting a suite at the football stadium with food and drink(and cool air) for the PNMs this past week. She should definitely check them out!

There is no chapter colonizing this year, but I wonder if she means Sigma Delta Tau, which will hold its own recruitment later.
(ETA: didn't mean to be redundant FSUZeta-- I was typing while you posted, and then I used an outdated link!).

There are 2 sororities considered the most logical for expansion at Bama and neither seems to be taking the bait. I realize there's risk at a school like this, but DG seems to be coming along just fine. And the numbers certainly justify expansion! Even the cost of one of those mansions can be justified when amortized over 200 members and 30 years to pay a mortgage. What do the people on the ground there think, other than cost of land, blah blah blah.

Agreed! By my count - 2,400 registered - about 20% with no bid (for whatever reason) that leaves ample room for at LEAST one new sorority. Looks like Bama has saved room on new row for new homes.....

Well, there is no cost of land as UA owns it all and leases it to the groups for the proverbial dollar a year. And the AXO house is in at $12 million.. Takes a lot more than 200 members and 30 years to pay that back. Alpha Phi seems to have a bottomless pit of money as they've gone thru the south colonining and building houses (Alabama, GA Tech, FSU, etc). I think - but am not certain - that Gamma Phi was still leasing their house from Alpha Xi Delta who orginally was in that location. At least as recent as 3 years ago that was the case. If AZD still owns it, they could get a decent price from UA for it and be that far up - along with all their alums - towards a nice down payment on a new one if they wanted to come back. After that, it would have to be someone with not much of an alum base but a good bit of money to come on as there aren't any others who have been there that are big in the area - or even nationally. Don't know whether Sigma Kappa would be interested as they haven't all along so evidently they have some issue at that campus that's keeping them away.

Panhellenic seems to be really interested in helping. SDT grow their numbers which could mean adding another group to formal in the next year or two? Which could certainly be helpful in with the huge increase in numbers going through formal. I would love to see SDT back on the row so I would encourage all girls released to check them out!

Where are you getting the 2400 number? The highest number we've seen is ~2100. You also don't need to have any bidless women to justify a new sorority. The large quota that just keeps getting bigger justifies expansion. The large number of women dropping out is a whole other story that has nothing to do with the need for another sorority.

I don't think the problem is with Bama not wanting to add chapters. They put out a notice awhile back and only one chapter showed interest. This chapter was not selected by the Panhellenic to colonize. I have always assumed that the NPCs not on campus may be the ones who are gun shy. A Bama sized house is a HUGE financial commitment, not sure how many of the non-represented NPCs are ready, willing or able to make that type of commitment. Looks like AXiD might be in the best position, already owning a structure.
