Pref Day

It's Thursday and this is where the rubber hits the road. Sorry-I like that expression and had to use it somewhere in this thread. And I'm so glad you guys are enjoying my story.
Anyway, time to go pick up my packet to see where I go for pref night. And it's pretty traumatic in the lobby that morning. Cuts were extremely heavy. We had been warned by our rush counselors to be prepared. My roommate and the rest of the younger girls that I've been hanging with are invited back to only one party for Pref night. They've already made up their minds that they are going to suicide. They really have no choice. I've lucked out this time. I've gotten invites to all 4 parties from Wednesday so it's goodbye to Baawee Kwipke. Nice girls but just never really connected with them. I'm feeling a lot better at this point because I know that I've got 2 really good choices that night, but I would have been honored to wear the letters of any of the 3. I'm pretty sure that I know which one that I want but I tried to keep an open mind.

Mrs. Wolowitz-they put on a great pref night. We had shrimp cocktail and they really rushed those of us who were there. Such sweet girls. But I knew this chapter was hurting for membership. Being there were so few rushees at this party, the ones who were there were treated with such kindness and attention.

Bernadette-beautiful pref night. They were all wearing gorgeous dresses that were made more so by the candlelit room. It looked like a dream. The chapter room was breathtaking and whatever doubts I had before were gone by now. I felt relaxed around these girls. I knew this was the one.

Penny-I'll have to say one thing about this sorority and that is they know how to recruit. They did a great job. They made you feel welcomed in their home and they knew how to rush you without making you feel pressured. I really felt like they did the best job of all of the sororities. When you left this chapter room, you felt good. Such a positive experience.

Signing my bid sheet was probably the easiest thing I did all week. I felt very fortunate to have 3 Pref parties to go to because so many girls had sailed through the first part of the week only to be cut Wednesday night for Prefs. It was a humbling experience but it ended well. Like so many of you have said before. It only takes one. The process will work itself out. I went to sleep Thursday night knowing that I would end up wherever I was meant to be.

Actually, it was hard even back then for an UC to get a bid. I think the most that our chapter could pledge were 2 UC's. That seemed to be the norm for most chapters. Some pledged only one.

Bid Day

I'm finishing my story tonight because I am impatient and hate it when people drag out their recruitment stories.
And once again, thanks for letting me tell my story. It's bringing back a lot of memories.

So bid day arrives and everybody is on pins and needles. I'm a little nervous because I didn't suicide but I still had my favorite. Not going to post how I filled out my bid card-mostly because I don't remember exactly how I completed it but also, I'm going to protect the names of the innocent.
That afternoon we're told to go back to our rooms and wait for the girls to bring our bids. They'll slip the bid cards under the door and we'll open them to find out where our new homes are. My roommate got hers first and mine seemed to take forever. Finally, it arrives and it was a bid from Bernadette, otherwise known as............................

I tried to think of which midsized, non-SEC university had Pi Phi chapters back in the day and then which one had about 9 groups!

Great story! The one you planned on dropping at the start and couldn't ends up being The One.

Thanks for sharing (and so quickly!).

I just need a technical point clarified. Would it really be a suicide bid if they only were invited to one party? I was always under the assumption that if the PM only had one party, they could only list one party. So these girls would still be available for snap bids? I guess what I'm really wondering is how the policy has changed since the time this story occurred until now. Did they even have QAs and snap bids in the 70s?

No if they are invited to one party, it is not suicide or SIP as it is known now. They are not only intentionally choosing one party and are maximizing their options. They would have been available for snap bids. I have no clue when QA and snap bids were created as I'm part of the post RFM crowd.

I know at the time that I pledged, there were no snap bids or QA's-at least at my college. And I believe, unless I'm crazy, that quota was determined by how many girls went through on the first day. If 270 girls signed up for rush, then quota was 30 girls for the 9 sororities.

That's how it was at the university where I was advising in the late seventies. What happened was that you had a bunch of dropouts throughout the week, especially when the pref invitations came because there weren't any rules about when you had to drop people you didn't want. Therefore, the big groups stayed big and the little ones folded or remained as the campus punching bags.

On my 1970s campus the maximum number of pref parties a woman could attend was two; however, you could list up to three groups on your bid card. Without question, my bid card listed three groups. By this method smaller groups sometimes took-in women who preffed, but were not ultimately chosen for membership by, the popular groups.
