All we really had when I was an undergrad was our crisis management plan. It'd be a situation where someone may have died, or the house burned down, or there was a hazing incident, or whatever else along those lines.

In its simplest form, basically, the President is the only person who talks to anyone about it, end of story.

There's also our guidelines from HQ: http://www.sigep.org/resources/chapt...is-management/

Here's a sample section:

Dealing with the media
If contacted, only the president or chapter counselor should speak for the chapter. Avoid “no comment” as it leads to speculation. Instead, make a simple statement: “We are aware that an incident occurred and are cooperating fully with the police and university officials who are investigating.” Keep repeating the above statement if you are pursued further. Do not give in because you are asked the same question several different ways. Never release names or admit liability. Depending on the circumstances, the national Headquarters may take over any direct contact with the media including the issuance of a press statement.

I went to MIT. A campus police officer was shot and killed last night. The campus is currently on lockdown. Classes are cancelled, employees were told to stay home, and students were told to stay in their residences.

My chapter's alumnae relations committee chair sent out an email on Monday to all chapter alumnae to let us know that the chapter president had contacted all active sisters and they were all accounted for. We don't have a house, so I imagine this involved a lot of phone calls and emails.

Yup. Never, for example, do this:

But a campus lockdown procedure? Nope. I'm not aware the campus has ever been locked down. Campus shooters are a pretty rare thing to happen. I'd rather we'd spend time on things like preparing for tornadoes, ice storms, etc.

Though these things are receiving a great deal of media attention, they are extremely rare. You're probably more likely to die by shark bite than by being murdered by a rampaging killer on your campus.
