I had to look this up, because hitting "reply all" on an email from his mom wouldn't have sent it to the entire student body unless his mom sent the original email to the entire student body. He hit reply all on a listserve email from NYU that he meant to forward to his mom.

I was just going to ask this! I was wondering how exactly he would have "replied" to the whole school from a private email (in addition to a panic attack that I may have inadvertently done this myself)

I think the fault is with the mailing list administrator.
When you have a list that goes out to all 40K students, you don't just accept emails willy-nilly. Imagine the abuse. Things with that much volume are usually moderated.
That said, there are a few situations where that level of control is impractical (i.e. open source projects). Every once in a while, I'd see random LinkedIn invites from those lists due to that pesky system. When I had that incident myself, I'm really thankful that the larger lists had filtering or else it would have easily reached 100k+ people who are most likely in my same professional circle.

Agreed. It would also help if the sender put the email list in the BCC: field. That way, for idiots who hit REPLY ALL, it will not go to all of the recipients.
