When I was a collegiate, there was a rumor that Phyllis Diller was an AOII. I have no idea where that came from, but I thought it for years, so even though she was before my time, I was so sad to see this news. RIP, Phyllis. You were a game changer.

When I was a collegiate, there was a rumor that Phyllis Diller was an AOII. I have no idea where that came from, but I thought it for years, so even though she was before my time, I was so sad to see this news. RIP, Phyllis. You were a game changer.
Considering how Phyllis looked, I'd guess some 'comical' fraternity men may have thought the AOII's on their campus resembled Phyllis and began the un-funny rumor.
