As for the debate of the Adelphean Society/Alpha Delta Pi and the Philomathean Society/Phi Mu, look at it this way: When the Normans took over England, they enslaved the English. The English got to take slaughter the animals, then serve the cooked animal to their Norman leaders (who spoke French). So, what the English called a cow in the field became boeuf when served for dinner. The English chicken became poultry (poulet). The cow and the chicken were still the same cow and chicken, but with new names - the animals didn't change. I would have much rather used vegetables (I am not responsible for what will happen to the first person to compare either of the Macon Magnolias to cows!) but I was taught this with the animal references.

The Adelphean and Philmathean Societies simply changed their names to go with the fashion. Their rituals remain the same - always have, always will.

I hope I don't have to add the caveat that I am not a Phi Mu, and therefore am making assumptions that they took the same road that Alpha Delta Pi did, concerning ritual!
Just to be confusing, we celebrate Founders' Day on March 4, though we were founded on January 4.
