As a UK Alumnus, I do not get the impression that UKCATFAN was "trash talking" the chapter her daughter was happy to join. Nor any other UK chapter.
And note, I can be just as hyper sensitive regarding my dear ole alma mater too. Right up their with the best of them.

She wasn't trash talking any sorority; she was describing her daughter's disappointment at being cut down to two. That's pretty harsh. Rush is tough, and an alumna of any group should know that and not get butt hurt at an imagined slight toward her sorority (or university, for that matter).
I believe to this day that I was successful in rush with Kappa because I didn't start out rush with it at the top of my list. I was able to relax and just be myself. As a result, Kappa became my home and where my heart is. I think this is what UKCATFAN was trying to say about her daughter.

This. Having survived SEC recruitment with my daughter at UK (not Alabama tough, but tough, this year especially. More girls went to pref than the total number signed up last year), this all reads to me that the mom advised her daughter to do EXACTLY what people encourage on this site encouraged her do. Which is, you may not love a house at first, but give it a chance. You get cut down to only a couple of houses, consider those the only ones available to you, and on and on. She did exactly that. Rehashing how the mom related it is perceiving a slight that just is not intended. The reality is that her daughter's experience mirrors that of many, many girls at UK this year. There were big cuts all the way through pref.
Phi Mu is going to be big time at UK in the next few years. They are off to a good start and had a great recruitment this year.
As for her anonymity? UKCATFAN = 1,000,000+ members of the BIG BLUE NATION. We are everywhere.

Pass the Pinot, please don't be offended, because I promise this isn't directed to you, but for the love of all things holy, the number of PNMs in a recruitment has NOTHING to do with tough cuts. The cuts are done by percentages, not raw numbers.

Tough cuts are due to the fact that there are so many wonderful qualified young women. Chapters make choices between PNMs that do not seem to make any sense to anyone not conducting Membership Selection. Heck, even some of the collegians don't understand it and get their feelings hurt when their rush crushes are not invited back. Releases (cuts) are tough to whomever is on the receiving end.

Exactly, this was my point. A mom with a hurting daughter just knows that her daughter was cut, whether it be by total numbers, raw numbers, percentages or throwing darts. It's painful all the way around.

Oh I know, and that's why I didn't really direct my comment to you. But to the untrained reader, your post could be interpreted to mean that this year more hearts were broken than ever. There is so much misunderstanding of recruitment and numbers - people posting on GC that omg 1000 PNMs and only 600 spots - cuts will be brutal! I just want to reinforce that more PNMs means MORE girls get placed (raw numbers), and yes, more get cut/withdraw, but the percentages stay roughly the same.

I thought that the UK stories were wonderful, full of the NORMAL highs and lows of recruitment. The Moms were sensitive and insightful and very open about their feelings which included anxiety, confusion, heartache, relief and great joy. I loved the UK stories and thank the moms for their honesty in telling them! As a greek woman I was not offended by anything that any of them said. Thanks for your great stories UK moms! Best of luck to your daughters!

Just wanted to let you all know that my daughter is thrilled to be a Kappa Kappa Gamma. She feels she made the right decision. She is having the time of her life.
At UK they have K week with all kinds of activities for the freshman. They divide all the students into groups of app. 30. My daughter sent me a picture of her K group and she is in Heaven. She is the only girl in her group. Every girl's dream.

Mine is having the time of her life also... rarely a free moment. She is spending a lot of time at "the house," which is presently an old fraternity house which they are living in, but they will be getting a new house next year just down the street. Hopefully she will be lucky enough to live in the new house her sophomore year. How is that determined? She's meeting lots of new people and went out today to buy a Phi Mu cup, iphone case, keychain, etc. I am thrilled she is happy and is loving every minute! This truly was a happy ending... just hope it stays that way when classes start.

Different chapters use different systems...some use lottery, some have a points system, etc., but usually non-seniors get priority because they are the ones who will be serving as officers and/or being elected to officer positions.
