There are some schools, where if you skip class to attend recruitment, you are immediately released from recruitment - period. If your school is one of these, you don't want to skip class.

If you're getting conflicting information, go over the Greek advisor's head to the student life director (or whoever her immediate boss is) and ask to see the rules in writing.
