My mom's side of the family is from Mississippi, I grew up on the stuff! It's great with butter and salt and bacon bits/crunched bacon on the top.

Oh there is this restaurant in Chicago (Wishbone) that serves southern food, and I got cheese grits there -- I had never tried them before, but they are DELICIOUS. I've also had grits with jalapeno peppers -- also amazing.

Why yuk? Chicken and dumplings, at least made by my mom or sister, are great.

OMG! That was one of my favorite childhood foods! My grandmother (who is Polish, not southern) used to make it for me all the time. I never knew it had a name until now - Thanks!

My mom is a great cook, I just don't like meat or chicken (esp. chicken)

I like my grits simple...with butter.
I hate chicken * dumplings.

FYI, there was an enterprising Southern Lady who started a business based on "GRITS - Girls Raised In The South". Needless to say, she's done pretty well!

Being from California I had never eaten grits until I was nine and visited the southern east coast... (Florida, the Carolinas) but I must say I enjoy them greatly... they are very closely related to cream of wheat... another thing I had never tried until I visited the south was hush puppies.. WHY DO YOU SOUTHERN PEOPLE hide these things from us ?????!!! OH they are sooooo great !! I LOVE LOVE LOVE them !! I find it interesting how things like grits and hush puppies can't find their way from the south... but borders and starbucks have seem to creep onto every corner !
