A lot of times, it's the "to do" thing for seniors in their HS, from their sports teams, etc. So they figure they're going to do it too, not realizing how much effort it takes if you're a first gen. greek or first gen. college student with few sources for recs.

I second this. Spring semester of senior year it's a huge discussion topic among girls and many perceive sorority life just as a way to party or be popular. They really don't understand the process or what it's all about they just sign up.
