I'm confused...does academic probation last an entire semester in most groups?

Yes. How else could you do it? You only get a new GPA once a semester. For schools on a quarter or trimester system, I'm sure they can synch that up with whatever their national policies are.

I think I am confused by the word "inactive". A woman who doesn't make grades still has obligations to the chapter (e.g. she still pays dues), and may be allowed limited social events, depending on the circumstances. There is a policy, but the disciplinary committee has some flexibility in meting out consequences. Further, the committee may have a mid-semester "check-in" with the woman in question to assess progress. Rarely have I seen women not allowed to participate in anything for an entire semester; that's what I find surprising.

You and I are thinking along the same lines. Also, the OP uses the term year for her suspension. Is she "inactive" for a full year instead of a term/semester?

I think she just means that it's going to happen *this coming school year* as in the next sentence she says "during the semester I'm inactive..."

I will be placed on academic probation by the sorority so I will be inactive...i'm not choosing to be inactive
Sorry if that was confusing - but it will be only for the semester not the whole year.
I'm 1 point away from a 2.5, do you think they would still let me be active and be able to attend social events? Are they allowed to do that?

You need to ask YOUR CHAPTER MEMBERS. Actual sisters can tell you what your sorority's policies are. However, I would assume that you still have to attend meetings and some other mandatory events. Social events, on the other hand, would most likely be out of the question.
My chapter, in the only instance I know of where someone was placed on academic probation, helped the sister get her grades back to where they should be by offering study hours and a tutor.
But again, no one will be able to tell you what your chapter is going to do. Ask them.

You are mixing terminology. Academic probation and inactive status are not the same thing. You'll more than likely still be required to attend meetings, pay dues, attend Panhellenic events or philanthropic events. From reading this board, most groups require some type of study hours for sisters who don't make their grades, and for my group you don't get to attend social events, but I have never heard of any group that completely kicks you out for a semester.

And another thing - you may be required to attend meetings, but not allowed to vote on anything.

Very true for some groups. I've rarely seen girls on academic probation just disappear, though. The OPs fear seems unfounded. Get to school and take care of your grades.

These were both true for my chapter.
But again, the OP needs to get off these boards and talk to her chapter members.
