Dear M_B,

High school was a very special time for all of us. For me, I was in a Rites of Passage program during my sophomore or junior year. One of the things which we did as a group was attend the Brother to Brother Conference that the Alphas at Howard conducted. I later became an Alpha myself.

For various reasons, high school fraternities and sororities are problematic. For the most part, many school systems have banned them outright. You might not know it now, but being in a sorority is a lot of responsibility that someone who is 14-18 may not be ready for. Most importantly, think about selecting new members - what if you were on the outside of an existing high school sorority? Do you really want people who are your age judging your worth to join a social organization? Situations like this easily get out of control and become glorified cliques.

Also, I don't believe most colleges will find it impressive that you've joined a high school sorority.

This is what I suggest:

Actively participate in the support group that you're in and ask the advisors if you can participate in college tours, or even ask local sorority members if they will come have an "open house" evening where they can discuss what it's like being in a sorority in college. Let your advisor do the leg work to make this happen.

And enjoy the step team, too. When you go to college and if you join a sorority there, you will see that Greek life involves so much more than stepping - you'll be glad you got it out of your system as a high school student because the community service will be way more important.

In the meanwhile, study very hard and get the best grades you can; do community service; and remain involved in the clubs and activities you enjoy. Focus on making strong friendships with young ladies and young gentlemen at your high school now - they can be lifelong friends if you invest in them now.

Don't worry about using a high school sorority to do that. Show sisterhood to everyone - be kind and loyal to your friends as well as those who aren't your friends yet - and you will be rewarded far more than a high school sorority could ever give you.
