UTK Sorority Recruitment
I am currently an upcoming freshman and am planning to rush this fall at The Univesity of Tennessee Knoxville. I was wondering how competitive it is there, any tips for rush and about the sororities. Thanks!!

It's an SEC school so it is competitive and you need recs.

Yes it's competitive
I know there are several groups who don't pledge anyone who has a g.p.a. under 3.0

ASK EVERYONE. Family friends, relatives, teachers, people at church/synagogue, anyone who was ever anywhere near a college. Also, ask the 1 person you do know for help finding recs for other sororities. They won't be offended.

Unless you are a member of that chapter of that group, you really can't comment on membership selection procedures and who will or will not receive a bid.

I guess I should say - you really can't comment and actually know what the hell you are talking about.

It has nothing to do with the OP's GPA. The discussion started with this reply about why it's a competitive recruitment:

Talk to any female college graduates you know and ask them if they are members of sororities or know women who are -- your teachers, church members, workplace contacts, parents' friends, relatives, etc.

Alabama Panhel has a good page about recs.

You need to rethink this before you give up. Your best recs are going to come from people you know personally. You need to talk to every female that you know who has gone to college and ask if she is Greek or if she knows any women who are Greek.

Bolded mine...many girls think it's up to them and their connections, but Moms typically know many more college graduates than 18 year old high school students.
Point being...leverage any women that might know you or OF you via your family.

I speak as a sorority alumna who actually attended Tennessee and participated in rush there. It is very competitive. Get your recs; a minimum of one for each sorority. Start talking to everyone you know. Practice your conversation skills.
As far as membership selection goes regarding GPA or any other criteria, that information is confidential. Worrying about your GPA now is pretty much like closing the barn door after the horse has been let out. Present yourself as best you can, keep a positive mindset, be open to every sorority on campus (there truly are no bad sororities there) and you will more than likely be successful.
I'm so jealous of you getting to go through now that sororities have houses. The panhellenic building has always been quite a sight on bid day, but the houses are going to all be so nice.
Please keep us on how things go for you. Go Vols! Hope the football season this year is better than it has been recently.

Beyond the outsider-in-our-business and loose-lips-sink-ships kind of thing, how is what NutBrnHair said that different than the posts in the GPA thread? Is the GPA thread only talking about the official and documented minimum gpa requirements? Serious questions and no disrespect intended.

It's a little more nuanced than that.
National groups have GPA requirements. I *think* this is public information for every group. However, some chapters also publish their own requirements, and these have to be at least as high as the national requirement.
Sometimes, the actual requirements are in reality much higher than what is published. Other times, those requirements are bent for an exceptional PNM or extenuating circumstances.
So, we can talk about 1) what is published and 2) what is generally required to pledge, but nobody can know the absolute rules for groups other than their own.
