You have a secret hand sign? I'm confused; what is its purpose?

I think that some fraternal groups have hand signs that are not something used publically as a "shout out" kind of thing, but rather are used in the context of ritual, or as a further means of identification in a non-public context.

Yes, I know that's the case, but this is not an official thing, as they mentioned, so I was thinking it's not ritual. I guess it could be an unofficial challenge or something of that sort.
In any case, I stand by the opinion I've expressed in other threads: white girls throwing up hand signs in pictures is dumb.

Somehow I misread and thought it had been adopted as official. My bad. Carry on.

The hand-sign is not a part of our ritual or any of our official symbols and is not secret. While SAI is not a multicultural sorority in name, we have many chapters on HBCU campuses and I think the hand sign and call (which we also have) is more prevalent amongst those chapters.

This is kinda the problem, as I see it. I don't mean to pick on your group at all, so I apologize for hijacking your thread. Basically, hand signs among non-D9 groups are mostly things the local chapter makes up, or one chapter makes it up and then shows it to others in the area, or whatever, but they are rarely (if ever) an official thing. Local traditions and whatever are cool, but a lot of them are like "wtf are those people doing with their hands?", and I would guess that most of the women/chapters making them up do no due dilligence on what else said hand sign might represent. For example, I saw one picture in which women were doing a sign very close to the ASL sign for "vagina". I can also think of, off the top of my head, at least NPC three groups that share symbols with Chicago gangs, and if, for example, a group of ZTA's decided to start throwing up crowns, they'd be signalling something very different from what they intend.

DBB, I totally agree with you. Hand signs that have no basis in meaning from your organization or your campus (other than to bite on other groups) are ridiculous.

I feel you. This is true. I don't know how it is with other organizations, but that's generally in a nutshell how it is with my frat. It's more to it than that, but it's still part of the identification process.
