Off topic, but, I just wanted to tell Wendi how sorry I am about her doggie. Ironically, I recieved a phone call earlier this week from my parents, and they told me that our family dog had to be put to sleep. Zoe was a part of our family for 13 years, and although she was old and sick...it doesn't make the decision any easier.

She was a faithful and loving companion, and no one could have had a better dog. I know you feel the same way about your dog, and I just wanted to tell you that I know how you're feeling right now, and I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I wasnt trying to offend with my comment, I was laughing because we are always told how "funeral like" black is and how everyone hates it, yet the only people to every complain on my campus have been VST, LCs and IHQ members. I am not trying to say that they don't have a right to say that, or to ask us to change, I am merely jesting at how on my campus there has never been a problem with the black as far as rush guests and members goes.

Please don't think I meant to offend, and believe me I know that there are members of IHQ, VST and even LCs that regulary read these boards, so I would never say anything to intentionally offend any of them. I am sorry if it what I said was misconstrude. I don't get annoyed with the comments we receive from them, they are always trying to be helpful. Personally I see where the entire black/mortuary thing could be, and I don't think something classy like red or green dresses would be bad. I just pray my chapter never uses white, or it will look like granny from the hillbillies made our preference decisions!!
Heehee!
Again, I apologize if I offended.
Sarah

I wanted to add that red looks wonderful....as long as everyone has the RIGHT color of red....lol. I'm dead serious, there should be a certain shade of red ALONG with standards of dress. I've seen very *cough* unbecoming dresses that were RED but also not too flattering.

Well, that's the only thing that can potentially be "wrong" with the black dresses. Someone CLAIMS to have personally KNOWN someone who started crying during a pref because it reminded her of a funeral. I think I've heard this a few times around the block...I'm beginning to think it's an urban legend.

Nina is right about that...the red should be rich and deep, not an orangy-tomato-kind-of-red. Yucky!

lol, I've also seen some hooker type of dresses-- along with MISMATCHED pieces...as if they found each piece off the clearance rack and they didn't care if they matched...as long as it was RED.

I still think that the chapters should have an "official" outfit to wear at Preference/Initiation Dinner/Representing AGD events. Whether it be a suit or dress, I think uniformity has it's place in these type of events. People know exactly what to wear and you know how you'll represent the sorority.

We didn't have a choice

The people ahead of rush told us what we were to wear to each rush event. Everyone had to wear black for their prefs. Before rush started they had all of us go to a meeting where they gave us info. In the booklit they gave us it had girls modeling what kind of outfits should be worn for each event.

I am the one that posted about the "funeral" feeling and it was actually a very close friend of mine. I am sorry that you think it is an urban legend but it did happen and that is why I feel very strongly about it.

As far as complaints, most new members will not just come out and say it. Again, we have surveyed recruitment guests that have and have not pledged Alpha Gam.

We just ask that you think about it and the potential benefit it may have on your chapter. Especially if you are not at Quota and Total - usually a change will help with the recruitment process.

Again - IC, IHQ and VST are only trying to help with the success of your chapter.

Red dresses at pref

I am from the same chapter as Alpha Gam 1019 and theta sig AGD. I know Wendi wasn't there last year when we did this. We had to decide last year what color we were going to wear last year and we decided on red because we THOUGHT this would be the best option. Just a side note: all the other chapters at our school wear black. We are the newest chapter so the rushees are already kind of leary about us. But, we all showed up in red last year and it looked REALLY bad. We had girls in all different shades of red, different lengths, stuff that didn't match, etc. It was awful. I wish we could wear black just so the attention would be off us. Trust me, for us it was a really bad idea. I don't know if any of the rest of you guys have made the switch and how you feel about it but it was the worst thing we could have done.

I don't understand why more structure wasn't enforced if we're going to "colors". You can't get the same shade of navy blue, much less red, buff, or green. I know IHQ, VST, LC, et al want to get away from the funeral feel, but I think it's going to be a disaster if people are just allowed to show up in whatever. If you're going to color, either the style is the same or the hues are the same. Think of it like you'd plan a wedding, you're trying to make an impact on your guests. You'd never have bridesmaids just show up in something green from their closet. Either the bridesmaids have the same style and different colors (in a certain hue) or they're all in the same color and same/variation style. We're marketing AGD, so I think a little more care needs to go in the "packaging".

Anyway, just my thoughts on the scary color decision....

Our pref party dresses are black. When we went to the training stuff in March (or whenever) we were told that we are supposed to wear red according to Internationals. We still wear black... more formal, and it's easier on the eyes than 60 some girls in different shades of red.

Probably the best thing to do in cases like what Nina and Erin are talking about it is to just bite the bullet and go someplace like a David's Bridal and have the chapter order a simple red sheath or a-line dress. Or the chapter could hire a seamstress and have dresses made from the same bolt of fabric. Granted, you would have to spend around $100, but at least you know that you will wear it at every pref. Consider it an investment in Alpha Gam's future success.
