I think that's what they did last year; required all the chapters to be there at the kickoff event. It was like a bait and switch. Most were not taking new members and that caused a lot of anger among the PNMs once they found out who was participating.

I guess I wonder then why bring up nationals or advisors at all? I mean the school can't tell the nationals/advisors what to tell the individual groups...either with what you said above or what I said. I'm sure some of the groups don't want to participate, but I am also reasonably sure that if they're 30% under total and tell their nationals they don't want to, their nationals are going to have a cow.

Yeah, but I think spring recruitment has always been seen as a bad thing so no one wanted to participate. Maybe their nationals would be okay to not do it if they thought it would make the chapter look bad. (With 11 chapters participating, it would be a hard sell, but they may try.) I can tell you, AOII IHQ would say, "Get your butts in there!"

I think it sounds like they are confusing "partially structured" with "partially informed."

Doesn't sound like they know how to do spring recruitment does it?

^^^To be fair, I think spring recruitment of this scale is kind of new to them. There are always kinks to work out when a school goes from not having much COR to having more and trying to structure it.

If they have such a large turnout of PNM's, then I suppose it is good they raised total. But if a lot of chapters are only going to offer a handful of bids, there could be a lot of disappointed women this week.

This happened at PSU two springs ago. Not that we're at the level of recruitment in terms of competitiveness that FSU is, but we did a partially structured COR after raising total, and it was a bit of a mess. We did a 'invite only' round as well, which I think would have helped in this case, but it was still a mess because at the last minute they decided the CPH was going to issue bids, not the chapters. Not to mention several chapters only has 3-5 spots open and pretty much knew who they wanted to fill them, there were a lot of disappointed and jaded women afterward. Hope it turns out better for FSU.

I also think that, when you have this many women coming out for informal, you have to ask yourself why these women aren't showing up in the fall for FR.

People aren't always rushing in fall because people are coming from all different situations and backgrounds.
It really frustrates me that so many sororities are so obsessed with the perfect PNM; a fall freshman. And I understand it's for money purposes, but it still makes me angry. Not everyone can be at the same school for four years and be ready to do recruitment their first semester!
Especially now at UF that a pretty decent percentage of students are being accepted into spring out of high school. So they will never get a chance to really rush because so many sororities don't do spring, and then they automatically have the upperclassmen thing attached to them if they wait until fall.
Sorry for the little rant!

That could just be an indication that the demographics of the school are changing...that many new students are unsure of/don't really know one way or the other about Greek life.

^^^The spring turnout is probably a little different than fall, probably some transfers, upperclassmen who weren't sure about FR, etc.

This is why I also think the campus panhellenics should endeavor to have actual total be very close to the prescribed total. I'm all for having a portion of the chapters "have" to do a spring rush in order to make up for the girls who pledged but didn't initiate, early grads and the variety of other reasons they lose members in a semester. Then they can accommodate the girls who simply didn't know better or who were so unprepared that they just bombed during rush when they are otherwise good candidates.
When they're so far over total the only chapters informal rushing are the ones that are struggling and that puts a negative connotation on informal rush.
Are there any inklings of expansion at UF? In the meantime, increasing total is at least a compromise.
I would like to see them do a Preference Night to help solidify some decisions on both sides and maybe give some girls a head's up that #1 super duper chapter is not going to be calling in a week when they have a bid from perfectly fine chapter in hand right now.

^^^Oh, I didn't even think about women turning down bids in case they're on the 2nd (or 3rd) list of the chapter they really wanted. As an adult, I would love to point out to those women that the chapter that had them on first bid list really want them, so why take a chance on being sloppy seconds at another group? Remembering back to my 19 year old self, though, that argument wouldn't have flown very far.
I can also see this being a big hot mess if all the chapters want the same set of girls. If you have 10 chapters that can give 20 bids, that's technically 200 bids - but how many are going to go to the same 20 or so girls? This could take awhile to get sorted out.
