Oh dear. There are really only two reasons to do that - you expect to be sued or (as in the case of Jeffrey Skilling in the Enron case) you expect to go to prison.

(oh wait - three - you are in a same-sex marriage but either move to a state that does not allow it or are worried it will not be recognized and you want to be sure your spouse retains your property if you pass away...)

I saw this article and thought it was very well written - it also could apply to dealing with other situations that have "bystander" effects....

Or four: estate planning purposes.

Yep, precisely - especially when you're in your 80s and your wife is 12 years your junior.

I'm not an expert on estate taxation in general and certainly not PA in specific, but there are dozens of non-nefarious reasons for an old man to sign over his house.

17, while illegal in many states ain't pedo territory.

Of course, impregnating your underage client is pretty unethical.

If you are one of those people who think that one person defines thousands, please watch this video, and remember what we do. Remember who we are, not who one person is. We are...A BIG TEN UNIVERSITY. We are... 1 IN 10 COLLEGE GRADUATES. We are... CEOs of MAJOR COMPANIES. We are... 40,000+ STUDENTS. We are...THON. We are... A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP VOLLEYBALL TEAM. We are... ONE COMMUNITY.

This university is our home. It is where we grew from children into adults. It is where we learn the skills today to become the leaders of tomorrow. We are thousands honoring the victims of this so called scandal, and we are reaching out to help all victims of abuse. We are not one man, or even a group of men, nor do we stand behind their actions, but we stand behind our University. We are THOUSANDS strong.

We are...PENN STATE.

You had me until "so-called" scandal.

Any way you cut it, it is a scandal. No, it should not define your university. Yes, Penn State is so much more than this one event. But you do yourself no favour by appearing to discount the reality of the situation by calling the scandal "so-called".

I get the sentiment. Of course Penn State is more than this and has lots to be proud of. I doubt anyone here thinks otherwise.

That said, SWTXBelle is right: This is not a "so-called scandal." It is a full-blown scandal. A huge scandal. You claim to honor the victims here, but how can you honor them when you diminish the significance of what happened to them by calling it a "so-called scandal"?

And really, I just have to say this -- I find it significant that the first positive thing you list is that Penn State is "A BIG TEN UNIVERSITY." I really don't think I'm alone in believing that part of the problem here is the way big-time college sports has all too often become the tail wagging the dog, so this just hits a nerve with me. I love college sports as much as the next guy, but there has been a complete loss of perspective on way too many campuses.

I think she was 16 when he got her pregnant. Also, can't you just take out the "underage" from your statement? i.e., Impregnating your client is pretty unethical.

Being almost 50 and impregnating a teenage girl is just gross, client or no.

That's the first thing I thought of.

It's funny, when I think of my college, its athletic conference isn't the first thing I think of--and I was an athlete.

I guess I mis-worded that.

I understand what you all are saying about the words I chose: "so-called"
I'm trying to think of how I meant to say it..... it has to do more with the effect it is having on the University as an institution than the actual injustices themselves...
I'll think on it and rephrase.

Yes it is a scandal, I understand that and am very angered that nothing was done about this in the first place when SO MANY people in that department knew about it.

I understood you to mean that the scandal is a scandal in and of itself, but that the university as a whole should not be scandalized by the actions (or lack thereof) of a small group of people.

My father signed over the house to my mother years ago because of the liability of his profession. If he were to be sued, the house is protected.

Right, but your college is also not as good at athletics (compared to a Penn State).

Also, I'd guess most people know of your university based on its "conference" affiliation - just saying.

That's part of the issue here - universities have become so much more than their physical boundaries or intellectual bases for a large number of people.

Just thinking that McQueary may have discredited himself if his claims about going to the police prove to be a lie. If so, Sandusky may be able to discredit all his (McQueary's) testimony and make it his (Sandusky's) word versus the victims with no corroborating evidence against him. The janitor is either passed away or unable to testify due to his mental health (can't remember). That is my fear.
