Some years ago my sister found a small box filled with the alligators from Chemise laCoste pull overs. When she asked our Dad what that was all about he told her that back in the day when these shirts were the warm weather uniform of fraternity men he and his friends liked the shirts but didn't like wearing a visable label (just not the done thing). So they would razor off the alligator and either can them or throw them in a box in the back of a closet.
I don't think times have changed to the extent that fraternity men would be comfortable walking around with huge advertising labels on their clothes.
