I grasp what you are saying and disagree with it. Opinions are opinions and behaviors are behaviors. Since we are social creatures many opinions and behaviors are quite common. This thread topic would not exist and persist if not for intraracial and interracial commonalities in expressed opinions and behaviors. I choose to highlight certain commonalities and that's that.

I read nothing rude or offensive. And that's a huge feat coming from a Black person who is hostile towards white people. *grabbing my 40 Acres and a Mule and going home to hang with my white siblings*

And regardless of whether you "understand," what you said about not being offended by whiteface is an extremely common and cliche` response from white people. It is not only embedded in personal opinion but also embedded in white privilege. It is an overall pattern beyond a personal preference.

Thanks for not lumping me in with the idiots.
I know I can never really live what nonwhite people have lived, but I do make an effort to be as empathetic to others as possible.
ETA: Just read the trainwreck that happened after my post this morning. If I recall, I believe DrPhil posted earlier in this thread that whiteface is not OK, which was what prompted my statement about how it wouldn't bother me.

Pretty cool idea, though.

Seems like there's going to be a halloween party after all! I'm going back and forth between Padme Amidala (in the regal dress with white/red make up) and C3PO, my guy would make an awesome Chewbacca

LOL. This thread has yet to reach the trainwreck/GC race war stage. There is still hope.
This is practically my normal hair and outfit (minus those shoes and being able to see-through) so I don't know where "African princess adult woman's costume" comes from. I guess I'm an African princess on some days.
Caption: "Discover your roots and celebrate your heritage in this authentic looking adult women's African Princess costume."
Oh well...there are pros and cons about that site. At least some (not all) of the people wearing the "more ethnic" costumes appear to be people of that ethnic group. It looks like they may have done better at that for the African Diaspora and Asian Diaspora costumes than the Native American (it is difficult to tell for some of the costumes) and Mexican costumes.

Is it see-through?
Question: Is blackface ever appropriate in other countries? (I'm thinking like in the Netherlands with Zwarte Piet who brings the presents instead of Sinterklaas)

Some people would be absolutely thrilled.

The larger image on the website looked see-through around the thighs but I could be mistaken.

Based on what I read on wikipedia:
Zwarte Piet is a mischievous, enslaved devil (is that correct?) who assists Saint Nicholas and has been portrayed as someone of the African Diaspora since the 1800s. The history and modern day prevalence of that depiction is no different than if that was done in the United States of America.
Yeah, this blackface is just another caricature of the African Diaspora in an environment where people of the African Diaspora are the population size and power minority.

I was under the impression that he was a Spanish Moor who came with Saint Nicholas (sometimes as a slave/ sometimes as a servant or freed slave who chose to serve St Nicholas - take your pick)

I find it problematic to depict someone of the African Diaspora as a servant or freed slave who "chose to serve" (LOL) anyone. You have Europeans running around in blackface and, as with many people in the United States of America, many of these Europeans have no real interactions with people of the African Diaspora. Zwarte Piet is all there is.

Much has happened in this thread since I last stopped by.
I'll throw out some randoms:
*I found out that the people wearing the 3 most "offensive" costumes (a suicide bomber, President Obama, and Osama Bin Laden) at that party Friday were all people with whom I attended high school. IDT anyone was personally offended by them but the whole atmosphere of the party changed when they walked in. People got uncomfortable.
*I saw no whiteface at all this Halloween but a huge surge in blackface costumes. While neither is "okay," this is funny give which one has been deemed "offensive" and which one many have said they would not be offended by.
*Wearing a short skirt or a low-cut top/body suit does not (alone) make a woman a slut. I don't think it's the best choice in clothing but hey some women like showing their sexual side or showing off parts of their body of which they are proud. I'm beginning to wonder if calling them slutty for that is part of the reason many women are comfortable doing that only on a day when they aren't supposed to be themselves.
